Is it Adrenal PCOS?

Post by Gecsc480 »

Hi Lara!

I have been struggling with "lean PCOS" in the form of frustrating hirsutism & heavy periods for about 12 years. No infertility (I have 2 little ones - got pregnant within 1 month both times). No insulin resistance. No major weight gain. I can also feel something is hormonally imbalanced and can't quite elaborate past that "knowing."

I have been seeking answers from my OBs, GPs and now an endocrinologist for 10+ years (symptoms started around age 20). I’m in the United States.

After finally convincing my primary call for more labs ... they told me to get a CT scan to look for adrenal cancer because of DHEA-S levels around 800. I felt this was extreme & asked for further information - they sent me to an endocrinologist. He called for another lab to measure the same levels (in-house..hm) and then said if we get the same results, we'll do a CT scan.

I am also 6 months postpartum, I was lactating (prolactin involvement with DHEA?), having some minor anxiety and not sleeping well. Normal Postpartum life. I wasn't asked about that much at all.

I just feel like a CT scan was ordered without even investigating further causes - they're saying it's just to "rule it out." That will be a stressful and expensive square 1 to get back to.

My home research also tells me adrenal cancer is rare and once ruled out, they won't have any helpful solutions other than hormonal birth control (isn't that supposed to be irrelevant in the case of adrenal PCOS?). That has never helped my symptoms so I’d hate to end up there yet again.

What do you recommend as far as first steps or any treatment?
