Definition of reaching menopause

Advice please. I'm 49 and my last period was in January 2023. So this January I assumed I'd reached menopause after a year without a period.
Today I've been bleeding, had some cramps and was concerned.
I phoned my GP who said because I'm under 50, I have to be two years without a period.
Has anyone been told that?
I am concerned about the bleeding. The GP said I should be able to get an appointment within the next few weeks and that I'll probably be sent for an ultrasound. This is all going to take time though. Should I be worried?
