Progesterone "intolerance" and estrogen kickback (anxiety depression, suicidal ideation, etc)

As someone who knows I need progrestrone, it is disheartening to have tried it and experienced kickback a few weeks later, to include intrusive and scary thoughts and being so depressed and anxious that I couldn't function. Why does this happen and how do we work around it? I've seen other women discuss it but have never seen it discussed in the context of why some women have this extreme mental health reaction and how to over come it.
