Teenage Daughters Painful Periods

Post by Julie Bodger »

Hi, my 15 year old daughter soon to be 16 has been having very painful periods for the last 6 months and at times being sick, she is missing days off school and her current cycle has come a week early. She has taken pain killers and being uncomfortable but ok and on the 3rd day she has had piercing pain, was sick and curled up in pain. She wants to go on the pill as she belives that will stop the pain and am at abit of a loss. Have asked for her to have blood tests to see if that shows up anything. Have tried magnesium supplements and fish oils but she doesn't take them regulary. She was allergic to diary as a baby and now tolerates it but generally avoids it but wonder if that may also be having an affect. Any advice that you may have would be greatly appreciated. Regards Julie

In my experience, a childhood history of dairy sensitivity strongly suggests that dairy sensitivity could now be playing a role in period symptoms, especially pain. That's true even if the original dairy sensitivity symptoms were outgrown. See my podcast: "What’s the Story With Dairy and Period Problems?"

Thank you Lara

Am not sure if you are able to help me but am nearly 52 and have been having regular heavy periods. After reading your hormone repair manual I have been on progesterone for about 16 months which has helped., 15 days on and 15 days off. I take magnesium and taurine. My recent period has now lasted 17 days and the GP has prescribed me vagirux. Wondering if you think this would help and if a period this long is normal at this age and stage of life? Thank you Julie

hi :) you can check iron levels—heavy or painful periods can sometimes be linked to low iron

It's good you're getting blood tests done to rule out anything serious. The pill can definitely help some people with painful periods, but it's worth chatting with a doctor about the different types and potential side effects. Also, since she had a dairy allergy as a baby, maybe keeping a food diary to see if anything specific triggers the pain could be helpful.

That sounds really tough for your daughter. :( It’s good that you’re pushing for blood tests to rule out underlying conditions. The pill does help some people with painful periods, but it’s worth discussing options with a doctor I think to find the best approach. If she struggles with supplements, maybe trying dietary sources of magnesium (like nuts or leafy greens) could help. Keeping a symptom journal might also help identify any patterns or triggers. Hope she finds some relief soon!

The pill can help a lot with painful periods, so it’s definitely worth discussing with a doctor. But since the pain is so severe and getting worse, I’d also push for further checks, things like endometriosis or PCOS can sometimes cause this kind of pain. If she’s open to it, staying consistent with magnesium and anti-inflammatory foods might help too.
